Fact #101013

When:

Short story:

Jimi Hendrix plays at the Salvation Club, New York City, USA, a gig allegedly organised by manager Mike Jeffery, under pressure from the gangster connections of the club's cocaine-dealing owner Bobby Woods.

Full article:

Roland Robinson (former bassist, Buddy Miles Express) : Jimi called me to ask if I had received my ticket. I said,'What?' He told me to come on up and try things with the band. When I got there, it was really screwed up, because I had quit the Express on bad terms. Billy Cox was there and he was really quiet. So I'm there feeling weird, and it occurred to me that Jimi hadn't told these guys that they weren't in the band any more.We had two bands there. You had two bass players, two drummers, and a lot of real hostility in the air.

Richie Rivera (barman) : There were a couple of cops at the top of the stairs leading down into the club, and Bobby was at the door grabbing the money as people came in and stashing it away.he kept coming to the bar and taking receipts.

Roland Robinson : Jimi's management was there, freaking out over all the people he was trying. Jimi started yelling, 'Just leave me the fuck alone! Let me play with the people I want to play with and I'll make you all the goddam money you want.'

We then got into this one jam, and Billy Cox was sitting in front of me with his arms folded, and Buddy was playing half-assed and scowling at me from behind the drums. Afterwards, Buddy started to get pissed off, and he told Jimi that if I was in the band, I'd be trying to take it over. So that set me off, and I'm shouting at Buddy that I'm going to kill him. It all got really funky, and I just said, 'Forget it.' It just wasn't going to fly.

Velvert Turner (friend of Hendrix) : Jimi was wiped out. He grabbed me at The Salvation and whispered, 'Don't you ever fuck up your life like I have.' He seemed tortured.

Bob Levine (Hendrix staff) : He spent the night with Bobby Woods. He didn't really know who he was. To Jimi he was just a nice guy who sold cocaine.

Jim Marron (Hendrix staff) : Hendrix was very scattered. Drugs had become the vehicle to escape his problems. He was using marijuana, hashish, cocaine - anything he could get his hands on, three to five times a week. Drugs were fast becoming a way of life.

Bob Levine : The next night, Woods was found murdered gangland-style. The 'boys' knew Hendrix had spent the night with Woods and wanted to know what he had heard from him. Hendrix hadn't heard anything about their business, but they had to make sure.
