Having just been sacked from Neil Young's band Crazy Horse, songwriter, singer and guitarist Danny Whitten dies of a combination of Valium, which he was taking for severe arthritis, and alcohol, which he was using to try to get over his heroin addiction. Horrified, Neil Young is inspired to write The Needle And The Damage Done, about Whitten's addiction and death.
