Filming begins on country star George Strait's first movie, Pure Country, which also features an appearance by John Doe, a co-founder of the Los Angeles punk group X.
John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers leaves the band prior to the publication of a Rolling Stone magazine cover featuring them. He has to be digitally edited out of the photo. He will return to the band in 1998.
