Lee 'Kix' Thompson, saxophonist with UK 2-Tone band Madness, is born in London.
Hugely popular American singer Paul Robeson performs several songs via telephone from a studio in New York City, USA, to an audience of 5,000 people in The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, Wales, UK. At this time, Robeson was, in Pete Seeger's words, "the most blacklisted performer in America", effectively silenced in his home country because of his defiant political stance against racism. The US state department had confiscated his passport, so he could not travel abroad, but he had a devoted audience in Wales who identified with his struggles.
