Lucky Millinder And His Band record D Natural Blues, for RCA Records in the USA. The track is virtually identical to a better-known song, The Hucklebuck, previously recorded on December 15, 1948 for Savoy Records by Paul Williams. It is believed, however, that Williams first heard it played by Millinder but he took it into the studio first. Both songs, it should be noted, bear a great deal of similarity to Now's The Time, recorded for Savoy by Charlie 'Bird' Parker in 1945.
Actor and singing star Howard Keel marries Helen Anderson, a young dancer he had met while he was starring in Oklahoma at The Drury Lane Theatre in London, UK.
The Metronome All-Stars (including Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Kai Winding, Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano and Shelly Manne) record Overtime and Victory Ball in RCA Studios, New York City, USA.
Lucky Millinder and his Band with Billie Holiday surrender to police on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, relating to an incident in Billy Berg's Club on Hollywood Boulevard/Vine Street, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA. Holiday is freed on bail of $2,500. (Read more about Billy Berg's club here)
The musical comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with music by Jule Styne, and starring Carol Channing, is presented at The Ziegfeld Theatre, Broadway, New York City, USA, during a run of 740 performances.
