Full article:

The first poll by Gilbert Youth Research for 1964 indicates that folk music has come into its own with the average American teenager. It was their favorite at the end of 1963 and all indications are that it will continue in popularity in 1964.

Sixty-eight per cent of the 1184 teens questioned in Gilbert's annual music poll named folk songs as their favorite music, leaving rock and roll and popular tunes far behind.

Folk singers also sweep the field as the most popular vocal groups, with almost half t h e young people naming one folk group or another as their favorite. Peter, Paul and Mary t a k e the number one spot, moving from last year's fourth place. Runners up include the Kingston Trio, Christy Minstrels and the Chad Mitchell Trio.

Connie Francis reigns this year as the most popular female singer, displacing Brenda Lee who dropped to third. Folk singer Joan Baez makes h e r first appearance on the list, taking over the number two position.

Favorite male singer is Johnny Mathis, who took second place behind Elvis Presley last year. Elvis slipped to fourth this year. Frank Sinatra follows Johnny Matnias. Others names included Bobby Rydell, Rick Nelson, Bobby Vee and Andy Williams.

Gazing into their crystal ball and coming up with some "Gns- well - type" predictions, the young people select Leslie Gore as the star of tomorrow. Peggy March and Barbara Streisland are runner - ups.

Peter Paul and Mary t a k e honors as the most promising vocal group of the future, despite the fact they are named this year's favorite as well. Following close behind a r e the Christy Minstrels.

An English group, the Beatles, appears on the list in second place, followed by the Ronettes, the Beach Boys and the Smothers Brothers.

Lawrence Welk, the "Champagne music maker," takes the place of honor as the teenagers' favorite band. Tied for second are Ray Charles, Duane Eddy and the rebels. The Dave Brubeck Quartet, took fourth place, representing those who favor jazz.

A point of interest brought out in' the poll shows that teenagers who swing toward the rock n' roll trend and follow m a n y "stereo-Type" local rock and roll outfits, are the ones usually with the lowest scholastic standings of their class.
