Fact #98596
When:
Short story:
The Rolling Stones begin a British tour supporting top UK pop idol John Leyton at Edmonton, London, UK. Also on the bill are The Swinging Blue Jeans, Mike Berry, Jet Harris, Billie Davis, and The Paramounts
Full article:
Mick Jagger (vocalist, Rolling Stones) : He was the headliner and then, as the tour went on, we were very lucky and we got these records, Not Fade Away and I Wanna Be Your Man. We became so popular on that tour that he had to give up being the headliner which, as you can imagine, was not very nice. But he was very, very gracious about it and very polite.
Bill Wyman (bassist, Rolling Stones) : Those package tours were modelled on the American 50s tours, eight or nine acts doing two or three songs. The Stones were supposed to be second on the bill to John Leyton but he couldn't hold the top spot so we took over. Our set was twenty minutes. On the previous tour with The Ronettes, we had a fifteen minute spot and, on the first tour with The Everly Brothers, we played for seven minutes.
