A cover version of the Leadbelly song Goodnight, Irene, by popular folk group The Weavers and musical arranger Gordon Jenkins reaches No1 in the Billboard Best-Selling Singles Chart in the USA, where it will remain for thirteen weeks. It will dominate the chart for so long that it inspires a parody, Please Say Goodnight To The Guy, Irene by Ziggy Talent and, four years later, an answer record, Wake Up, Irene, by Hank Thompson, which will reach No1 on the Billboard magazine country chart.
