Fact #90438
When:
Short story:
Robert Smith of The Cure marries his childhood sweetheart Mary Poole at the Benedictine Monastery, Worth Abbey, Sussex, England, UK, Europe, where The Cure had played their very first gig.
Full article:
Robert Smith : No-one knew the venue. Everyone had to get on a coach and be taken there in secret. Some people thought we'd gone a bit over the top but the wedding had nothing to do with the group and I wanted it emphasised that it was about me and Mary. If just one journalist or one bunch of fans had been there, that would have ruined it for both us and both sets of parents.
The main reason we got married was to have a day we got married on. But actually it was the best day we ever had. It was brilliant to have all the family there. It would have been wrong if we hadn't done it. It means quite a bit, but we both still think of each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. In fact, that's what we still call each other.
Robert Smith : Mary has been the great influence in my life, the rock that stays strong when I lose my head. She noticed, for example, that I become aggressive and unfriendly when I cut my hair. So I make it long. Mary is very maternal with me. And very, very tolerant.
