The First National Jazz Festival, organised by Marquee Club owner Harold Pendleton, begins at Richmond Athletic Grounds, Richmond, Surrey, UK. Acts appearing over the course of the two day event include Johnny Dankworth, Chris Barber, The Mike Cotton Jazzmen, Tubby Hayes, Ken Colyer, The Back of Town Syncopaters, Gerry Brown's Jazzmen, The Clyde Valley Stompers, Alan Elsdon, The Tubby Hayes Quintet, Jazz News All Stars, Terry Lightfoot, The Merseysippi Jazz Band, The Original Downtown Syncopaters, The Freddy Randall Band, The Don Rendell Quintet, The Ronnie Rose Quintet, Alvin Roy's Saratoga Jazz Band, The Ken Sims Vintage Jazz Band, Bob Wallis And His Storyville Jazz and Alex Welsh And His Band.

Harold Pendleton (organiser) : At the time, jazz was not popular with the authorities. We only got to use the grounds because they were desperate for money and had an old stand they hoped we'd burn down so that they could claim the insurance.
