Full article:

Mike Rutherford: Prior to The Mechanics I'd made two other solo albums, one on which I sang myself.  But after that I think I've realised that wasn't really my area. I like working with other people, like in Genesis where I've worked with the different members through the years, and I think I'm more creative in a combination situation.

And so I've decided to make The Mechanics more a band thing. I wrote some songs with producer Chris Neil and BA Robertson, and then we thought; who the hell is gonna sing them? We hadn't planned anything. And we got very lucky I think; Paul Carrack came down and sang Silent Running on the first day, and Paul Young came down and sang Miracle on his first day. And it sort of all fell together.

B.A. Robertson (songwriter) : I was introduced to Mike by one of the people in his publishing company. It was not anything glamorous - I just got a phone call and I was asked if I wanted to meet him at his house. And I thought; why would I wanna go all the way to Guildford to work with some bloke who plays the bass for Genesis? [laughs] But I did go and the rest, as they say, is historical.

Chris Neil (producer) : I was known for making pop records, and the not the Genesis type of things at all. But musically we got along instantly, in fact Mike was a great admirer of well-crafted pop music. And as a songwriter, it was something he was trying to do since a long time.

Paul Young (Mike and The Mechanics) : This is a singers' dream really - you go down and get to sing good songs, it's well recorded, well engineered, it's well mixed,.. . You know it's a great thing, I enjoy it!

Paul Carrack (Mike and The Mechanics) : Everybody is very equal; everybody is quite experienced and has been through all kinds off stuff, and they don't want a lot of hassle but basically they want to make... they wanna have fun making some music. And to make a good record.
