Huey P. Meaux (record producer/entrepreneur) : I was at a record pressing plant and I was listening to some of the records, both sides, and I was hoping to hear some new sounds. I heard Bruce Channel's Hey Baby and Paul And Paula's Hey Paula. I said, 'Hey, man, these are hits.' They weren't my records, but I figured that the world needed to hear about them. I was told that they were Major Bill Smith's, and they had been there for some time.
I called Major Bill and I said, 'Major, you got two hit records here,' and he said he couldn't get airplay on them. I told him to let me have some copies and I'd work them. I busted both of those records for him in Houston, Texas, USA. I loved them. I thought they were hits and I was proven right.
Everyone thought Bruce Channel was black. I said, 'Major, don't let him do it (appear on American Bandstand tv show). He should get two or three hit records first, because the minute he appears his career will be over.' And it was.
