Petula Clark : I wasn't ready for it. As far as I was concerned, I had my career wrapped up. I was a big star on the continent and that was enough work for me. But The Beatles had opened all doors for British artists in the States and when Joe Smith picked up Downtown and decided to release it in America in its original form instead of getting an American artist to cover it, it was an instant hit without me having to go there to plug it.
