Twas verily ye tyme of ye quest for ancient magicke, a tyme of tinkling dulcimers, hurdy-gurdies and theorbos, a tyme of stout-hearted heroes clad in cape and cod-piece. It was, to be precise, 1972.
On Top Of The Pops, Slade and Little Jimmy Osmond battled it out for chart honours but, behind closed doors, hidden in the blue-smoke haze of folk dives and student unions across the land, subtler forces were at work. Here was an arcane world of faerie-folk and fol-de-rols, where people were fair and had stars on their embroidered loons. Leading this merrie throng were ragged bands of free men, clad in doublet, hose and stash-pouch, foremost among them being The Amazing Blondel, Gryphon, Magna Carta and Decameron.
