John Keenan (organizer) : I rang around various places and the cheapest was The Bingley Hall. It was an agricultural hall. There were loads of extra costs, though, including one involving hire of a 50 foot cherry-picker to deal with the skylights above the stage, which let in too much light.
The best band of the weekend to my mind was Simple Minds. They were at their peak then, absolutely brilliant. It was obvious even then that they were to become a stadium band. Theatre Of Hate were good, as were Gang Of Four.
Then there was the Sisters Of Mercy – it was one of their first major gigs. They performed Sister Ray, which lasted a long time.
