Fact #66940

When:

Short story:

Twisted Sister release their fourth studio album, Come Out And Play, in the USA.

Full article:

Dee Snider (singer, twisted Sister) : After I had testified in the PMRC hearing in the Senate, when we released our next album, Come Out And Play, and went on tour, moms and dads thought we were the worst thing in rock'n'roll so they told their kids, 'Sure you can go see Motley Crue, but you're not going to see Twisted Sister.' So our ticket sales and merchandising suffered greatly. I remember meeting one fan at our show who said we were his favourite band but he was wearing a Dokken shirt. I asked why he hadn't bought a Twisted shirt and he said, 'Oh, my parent's can't know I'm here.'

We had a press conference before every show on that tour and after three or four of these I realised no-one was asking any questions about the record. I asked this roomful of people if anybody had a question about the band or the new album – dead silence. I said 'Thank you.' I left and we did no more press conferences.

Also, the video for our single Be Chrool to Your Scuel got banned by MTV. It had zombies in it so we pointed out that Thriller had zombies in it and we asked what we had to edit to make it work for MTV and the response was 'there is no edit you could possibly do to make this video work for us.'

So we found out in winter 1985 that people were still up in arms about it, there was still this PMRC fervour. My career was shot to pieces. I'm not just blaming it on the PMRC. We were over-exposed, I chose wrong tracks, but the PMRC didn't help.

Lastly, the audience was apathetic to the anti-censorship cause. I thought I was leading people into battle but when I turned around there was just me all alone out in a field with my dick in hand being shot at. They didn't get the significance that if you allow these cracks in your rights, it will only get worse.
