This indie-emo quartet from Las Vegas may look like a bunch of over-privileged public school sixth formers, but the music is whip smart. Hailing from Vegas, you might expect them to sound a bit like The Killers, and there is certainly a dance-consciousness about some of the grooves, but Panic! have a lot more in common with Fall Out Boy, currently being hailed as the first emo superstars. Both bands toured the UK earlier this year and Fall Out Boy delivered the better live shows but, on record, Panic! take some beating. Every track overflows with irresistibly singable hooks and finely detailed arrangements that make repeated plays extremely rewarding, and that goes for the lyrics too. When did you last hear a better description of teen lust than “Exchanging body heat in the passenger seat”? When did anybody last nail scenester narcissism with a line as pointed as “I know, it just doesn't feel like a night out with no-one sizing you up.”? Unreservedly recommended.
