Paul Weller (guitar/vocals, The Jam) : People always mention the ‘Taxman’ thing. The song’s not the same, it’s just that ‘bom-bom-ba-bom-bom-bom’. But we weren’t exactly the first people to do that. You take the song away from the backbeat and the bassline and it’s a very different thing altogether. But I really liked the sound on Start!. We got that real minimalist, sparse sound. There was a slight Gang Of Four influence going on.
