Paul Simon has to be brought back from the UK, where he is a solo performer, and Art Garfunkel has to quit his studies at Columbia University, New York, in order to record enough new tracks for an accompanying album.

Al Stewart (singer-songwriter/friend of Paul Simon] : Tom Wilson mailed a copy of the new Sound Of Silence to Simon, who was horrified when he first heard it. In fact, when you listen to that version, you can hear the rhythm section slow down at one point so that Paul and Artie's voices can catch up.
Paul Simon : I remember getting a letter from Artie saying that they were very excited about the new release. And then I was doing some dates in Denmark a few weeks later, and I got a copy of Cash Box, and the song was number 59 with a bullet. I said to myself, "My life is irrevocably changed."
Al Stewart : The single went in at something like 86, climbed to the thirties in the second week, and then Columbia rang Paul to say 'It's going to be number one.'
Paul Simon : I was more comfortable being a solo artist at that point. I remember saying to my girlfriend Kathy, "Well," I said, "I think this record, this is gonna be a hit, and I think if I go back to the U.S. I could make ... 25,000 dollars. That shouldn't take me too long, and then I'll come right back."
Art Garfunkel : To this day I think Paul would say that that was the happiest time of his life. Just before fame. Things were working in turns of .... , well, he had a very healthy ego, and he was ..., he has his guitar slung over his back, and the way ... I'm sure he had the right black heels and his boots, you know ...
