John Lee Hooker : I'd had to learn guitar when I was a kid. We lived down in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and my grandpappy, he was a nut about me learning to play an instrument. I had an old, battered, home-made guitar and I did my best on it.
But grandpappy said I had to be different. He nailed up some strips from the inner tube of a tractor tyre and made me stand there and pluck away, like they were guitar strings. Boy, I hated being made to work at my music like that. I was a real lazy guy. But I'm sure grateful to grandpappy now.
