Fact #53248

When:

Short story:

The Beatles make their first evening appearance at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, UK, Europe, as a guest act supporting The Swinging Blue Genes, who will evolve into The Swinging Blue Jeans. Entrance charge is two shillings (members) or four shillings (non-members).

Full article:

Bob Wooler : The Blue Jeans had a Tuesday night Guest Night at The Cavern, and they chose the groups they wanted … groups that wouldn't conflict or clash with themselves. Ray McFall (cavern owner) put The Beatles on with them, and The Beatles' fans just swamped the Blue Jeans' fans.

Neil Foster (sax, The Delacardoes) : I got there about 9.00pm and the Cavern looked empty. At first glance it seemed like a dead night but, as I moved further in, I realised that everybody was clustered about six-deep around the stage, at the feet of The Beatles. This wasn't a big crowd, but it was utterly devoted.

The hierarchy in Liverpool at that time probably had The Big Three at the top, then Rory Storme and the Hurricanes with Ringo on drums, then Gerry And The Pacemakers. The Beatles were some long way down the list. Musically I'd never been impressed by them. Their singing was generally good but their instruments were often out of tune and they'd just keep on playing. That night was really no different.

The only thing that set The Beatles apart was that they were unbelievably arrogant. The Cavern was the ultimate Liverpool gig and most bands were nervous when they played there, but The Beatles treated it as if it was nothing. They also looked different. All the other bands were smartly dressed, but they looked as if they didn't bother shaving, washing or pressing their clothes. John and Paul had been very smart in The Quarrymen, but Hamburg changed them.

Bob Wooler : The Blue Jeans did not have a happy night that night, and altercations between Ray Ennis of the Blue Jeans and Ray McFall took place at the top of the steps to The Cavern. Ray Ennis said, 'We're not having them on our Guest Night again!'
