Fact #52247

When:

Short story:

On a privately chartered BOAC Boeing 707, The Beatles fly to the Bahamas and book in to the Balmoral Club, Cable Beach, to begin filming their second movie, Help!

Full article:

Richard Lester (director) : Overall, it was about nine weeks and something. But probably just under eight weeks actual shooting. Five-day week in the studio. I seem to remember about ten days in the Bahamas, about five days in Austria and then the rest in studios and out and about.

We had our own plane. We chartered a plane to take the crew and cast and all.

Victor Spinetti (actor) : On the flight, the boys moved about and sat and talked to members of the unit. John was delighted with his new contact lenses. What a difference they made to his everyday living, he said. He had, apparently found no difficulty wearing them. I asked him if it was a secret that he wore them. 'Good Lord, no,; he replied.

Terry Huxton (Rave magazine) : Although The Beatles' special BOAC charter flight was not due in at Nassau's International Airport until 8.15pm, thousands of faithful fans had been waiting for their idols since dawn. But The Beatles, aided by local officials, gave them the slip. The boys were waved past the normal customs clearance and bundled from the tarmac into a waiting limousine which sped them to a Press Conference at the Emerald Beach Hotel.

Walter Shenson (producer) : It was a totally different type of movie from A Hard Day's Night which was in blackand white and had a feeling of actuality to it; it seemed like an exaggerated day in the life of The Beatles. Help!, on the other hand, was more like a 'movie' movie. It was like a live cartoon. It was a bigger picture.

We went to the Bahamas and the Australian Alps for locations. It was in colour, long shooting schedule and a bigger cast of actors besides The Beatles. Things that add up to a more expensive movie.

The reason nobody baulked at spending more money for Help! was, number one, The Beatles were so successful as entertainers, with concerts and records. Number two, A Hard Day's Night was such a successful movie that it was agreed to spend more on a second picture.

Terry Huxton : Before going to bed, The Beatles went for a quick swim in the moonlit ocean. They have private beach just outside the luxury cottage which they share while filming in Nassau. The place is guarded by police Night And Day.
