The newly emerging musical style of bossa nova, sub-titled "new Brazilian jazz," is presented for the first time to an American audience when Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes and other Brazilian musicians play at the Carnegie Hall, New York City, USA. The audience includes Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Erroll Garner and Herbie Mann, all of whom have come to check out the new phenomenon.

Alvin Chediak (songwriter) : I went to the United States under pressure. I didn't have, for example, any confidence in that Bossa Nova concert at Carnegie Hall. The concert was held on November 22, 1962. I flew out of Brazil on that same day and arrived in New York just in time for the concert. My songs were on the charts, everybody wanted to meet me; the Americans were very nice to me, and all that. I ended up staying. By then, Stan Getz had sold over a million copies of Desafinado.
