Fact #39612

When:

Short story:

Bob Dylan makes a guest appearance at a Joan Baez concert in the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Full article:

Country Joe McDonald : At that point, I had played some local venues in Los Angeles, like The Ice House and The Ash Grove. It was quite a casual thing. I took some lessons from a guy called David Cohen who was a well-known session musician - not the guy who later joined Country Joe And The Fish - who taught me how to play Carter Family-style guitar, and double-thumbing, which is folk style and I got very interested in The Carter Family.

Then, about 1963 ... my parents loved Joan Baez, so they took me to The Hollywood Bowl, and she brought out Bob Dylan as a guest and I thought to myself, "I can do that." So I kind of started to move more in that direction, but that's the way I was heading anyway.

Then my friend from the folk song club, Blair Hardman, played banjo and guitar, so we used to go up to Pershing Square in Los Angeles and play for the bums up there, and we'd go to The Salvation Army and get a free meal, which was all quite fun.

Then I dropped out of school, I couldn't study any more, I lost my concentration, and I thought I would go up to San Francisco with my then-wife, Kathe Werum, and become a folk musician, playing music with the beatniks, and those girls in leotards who were dancing around. You always saw them in the Jules Feiffer cartoons, which I saw while I was in the Navy.
