1,000 unarmed protesters are killed by government troops during an anti-government demonstration in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China, Asia. Chinese rock music played its part in supporting the protest, most notably the song Nothing To My Name by Cui Jian, who was among the students in the square. Nothing To My Name was, in effect, the anthem of the student protesters. This horrific incident is documented in the song 4 June 1989 by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
