John Mayall : When we persuaded Rick Gunnell from The Flamingo to put in John Lee Hooker he needed some convincing. Before then, people like John lee had only played acoustic shows as part of the folk blues circuit. But when we played with John Lee there were queus right down Wardour Street and all these long haired kids who'd come down from the North. I think guys like John Lee or T-bone Walker were flattered, and kind of surprised that their music had an appeal to a bunch of white kids over in England. They were pleased we were playing their music, although I don't think they thought we were very good at it.

John Mayall : It was a very humbling experience, because we all thought we were shit-hot players and knew what it was all about. Then you get Hooker onstage and what you know flies out the window.
John Lee Hooker : I'm bound to say that The Groundhogs are one of the number one best blues groups that you have over here, and it fits in with my type of music perfectly. I want to say this
