Fact #29041

When:

Short story:

At the end of Bruce Springsteen's headlining set at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in Hyde Park, London, England, UK, he is joined onstage by Paul McCartney. Unfortunately, after just a couple of songs together, the local authorities pull the plug on the power system, bringing the show to sudden end because the musicians have run over the time allotted for the show.

Bryan Grant (MD, Britannia Row audio) : We had the power pulled on us by the police during the McCartney-Springsteen gig in Hyde Park. That was quite lively. Thank goodness it was a Springsteen crowd. If it had been an Oasis crowd we’d probably have got lynched. They were going to arrest the promoter for over-running if the plug wasn’t pulled. The police view was that crowd control would become impossible if it went on any longer.

Times have changed since I started in the 70s. I remember doing the first Knebworth gig and being told that people could hear it five miles away. We were really chuffed by that, thought it was brilliant. Nowadays, of course, if that happened, you’d be slitting your wrists.
