Short story:
Johnny Cash makes his hotly-anticipated New York City, USA, debut at Carnegie Hall. Unfortunately, he is struggling with drug addiction, his voice is hoarse and weak, and he leaves the stage in what he will later describe as a "deep depression." Afterward, he consoles himself with a visit to The Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village, where he sees native American protest balladeer Peter La Farge, performing The Ballad of Ira Hayes.
