Fact #21205

When:

Short story:

It is reported that Veronica Lake, once one of Hollywood's most glittering stars, is now working as a waitress, under the name Connie De Toth, in the cocktail lounge of a hotel in Manhattan, New York City, USA. Many years later, this story will inspire The Human League to write the song Don't You Want Me Baby?, with its opening like, 'You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you." Phil Oakey, who composed the song, also famously sported a distinctive haircut, worn long on one side to cover one eye, as Veronica Lake had done at the height of her fame.
