Fact #20648

When:

Short story:

Bob Dylan plays at The Troubadour Club, London, England, UK, Europe. "Half the audience loved it, the other half hated it," recalled the club's legendary door-minder Anthea Joseph many years later.

Full article:

Anthea Joseph (Troubadour staff) : The day before I'd been in Collett's (bookshop) and read this article by Bob Shelton about Bob Dylan. I listened to that first album in the shop. I didn't like it. None of us liked it. Bits were OK, but you wouldn't buy it.

The following day I saw these feet coming down the stairs, cowboy boots and jeans, which was quite unusual, and I thought, 'Oh God, it's one of the Southend hillbillies, I can't bear it.' Then he came down a bit further and I saw the face and thought, I know that face. He pushed some money at me and said, "Can I come in?" Hang on, you are Bob Dylan? "Yes, I am." Right, if you play, you can come in for nothing. Half the audience loved it, the other half hated it.

Alexis (Korner) and Bob met in my house. It was fascinating; Alexis being the bluesman, Bob being a quasi-bluesman, Woody Guthrie, the two things crossing over. And they sat there on the floor with me delivering drinks, food, coffee, all of which was ignored because they were nose to nose. Alexis had this great capacity to get people to talk. Intellectually they gelled, it wasn't just music, but the conversation was obviously full of "Have you heard this riff?" and "Do you know this song?"
