Fact #20548

When:

Short story:

Visiting Liverpool, UK, on Beatles business, EMI producer George Martin is persuaded to see Brian Epstein's new discovery, Gerry And The Pacemakers in Birkenhead. Later, at The Cavern, he sees The Beatles and The Fourmost, and is introduced to the club's hat-check girl, Cilla Black.

Full article:

George Martin : I watched Gerry And The Pacemakers bound through three numbers, scrubbed around the usual audition routine and asked Brian to pencil in a date for Gerry's first studio session. He combines exceptional stage presence with an uncommonly exciting vocal personality.

Cilla Black. : I knew it was only a temporary job until I became a star.

Dave Lovelady (The Foremost) : We were the second group Brian Epstein asked to turn professional with him as manager. He had brought Parlophone record producer George Martin along to The Cavern to see The Beatles on an evening when we were guesting. He made us the offer there and then after our spot, but we declined. In actual fact, we turned him down three more times because were all working or studying. We finally accepted Eppy's offer at the fifth time of asking in June 1963, mainly on account of what he had achieved for The Beatles and his other signings. Looking back now, I can see we made a mistake by holding out so long. If we had been his second signing after The Beatles, we probably would have done much better.?
