Green Beret James Gabriel, Jr., becomes the first native Hawaiian to die in Vietnam, Asia, executed by the Viet Cong while on a training mission during the Vietnam War. The 1966 hit song The Ballad Of The Green Berets will be written partly to honour James Gabriel, but the verse about him will be removed before the song is released.
