Paul Weller (guitar/vocals, The Jam) : I liked the kind of atonal thing that Joy Division did, I liked aspects of it, so that was what I was trying to work into The Eton Rifles. It was certainly an influence, not in any major way, but in terms of sound.
It was only with that single though, that Radio 1 started playing The Jam – because they had no choice. The groundswell was just getting bigger and bigger.
