Seventeen year old African-American teenager Trayvon Martin is shot dead by community watch member George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, USA. Zimmerman claims to have shot Martin in self-defence but there is no hard evidence to support the claim. Zimmerman will eventually be charged and tried on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter, but a jury will acquit him in July 2013. Trayvon's death will be memorialised in the 2012 song Everybody's Son by Unitas Quick, based on a poem by Saira Viola.
