Fact #188230

When:

Short story:

Ebenezer Joshua is born in Kingstown, Saint Vincent, British Windward Islands, Caribbean, West Indies. After founding The People's Political Party he will become the first Chief Minister of the island in 1957. In the midst of a general strike among plantation workers in 1962, Joshua will be involved in negotiations in Barbados, leaving the strike to be put down by thugs paid for by wealthy plantation owners. The 1965 song Joshua Gone Barbados by Eric Von Schmidt will detail this story, putting the blame on Joshua, but some commentators have claimed that the song was based on a misunderstanding of the situation.
