Fact #186938

When:

Short story:

Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr of The Beatles fly to Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Europe, for a holiday at the home of their friend Klaus Voorman's father.

Full article:

Klaus Voorman : I got a letter from Paul, asking me if they could come to Tenerife for their holiday. They were really working hard at the time in the studio, recording – their success came then.

We heard in the middle of the night that their plane was lost somewhere. Nobody knew where they were. It was terrible. So, sometime in the morning they came.

Ringo Starr (drummer, The Beatles] : They didn't have electricity, so we really felt we were bohemians.

Klaus Voorman : I had a little Austin healey sports car and |george came and asked, 'Klaus, do you think I could have a spin in your car before I go to bed?'

George Harrison : We took it up to the volcano. It was like the surface of the moon up there, and there were telescopes and a big observatory.

Ringo Starr : That was the first time I had been anywhere where there was black sand. I'd never seen the like of that before. It was a real good holiday.

Paul McCartney : I got terrible sunburn – that British tan that hurts so much later. That gave me quite an uncomfortable time. And I got caught in a riptide. I was in the sea and thought, 'Now I'll swim back in,' but I realised I wasn't getting anywhere. In fact, I was getting further away.

Klaus Voorman : It was the last time in their whole life that they could walk freely among the general public, the last time they could just sit in the plaza and watch the people walk by.
