Roy Theodore Hawkins is born in Jefferson, Texas, USA. He will achieve a measure of success as a blues singer, pianist and songwriter under the name Roy Hawkins, initially with his band The Four Jacks. In 1951, he will make the first recording of The Thrill Is Gone, later to become the signature song for B.B. King.
