After arriving at the London Arena, Docklands, London, England, UK, Europe, by helicopter, Robbie Williams pulls off a hat-trick at the BRIT Awards, winning the categories for Best British Male Solo Artist, Best British Single (Angels) and Best Video (Millenium). Manic Street Preachers are Best British Group and their album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, is Best British Album. Best British Female is Des’ree, Best British Dance Act is Fatboy Slim, Best International Male is Beck; Best International Group is The Corrs. A pop supergroup including Billie, Tina Cousins, Cleopatra, B*witched and Steps is brought together to sing a tribute to Abba.Full article:
Claire (Steps) : We recorded all our bits first. Everyone else was away and Tina Cousins and us used the same studio, but Billie recorded her part right at the last minute, just a few days before the BRITs.
We knew all the bands with us – Cleopatra, B*witched, Tina Cousins and Billie. Tina was working in the same studio with us and Pete Waterman and we’d been on the Smash Hits tour with all the other bands. We sang Take A Chance On Me, Dancing Queen, Mama Mia and Thank You For The Music. I don’t know if it was ever discussed to put beards on the Steps boys. Imagine H with a beard! I can imagine Lee with a big bushy growth, mind you.
When I woke up on the morning of the BRITs, I had the worst tonsillitis and I was absolutely petrified about all the people who were going to be there. Learning the dance routine was nerve-wracking. Everybody else had been OK with them for two weeks and I was thinking, ‘They’re all going to think I’m an idiot.’ We got the routine eventually, but it takes a lot of practice. Steps normally don’t get too nervous but I often start saying, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ and make them all nervous. I was very scared that night.
That performance got us a cover of Smash Hits. It was me, Billie, Edele and Cleo, and it was shot at rehearsals before we performed. That was when I had lovely short hair, before it went pink and red.
After the performance, we did a few interviews then eventually got to our table and sat down for the end of the awards. That was the year Belle And Sebastian beat us to Best Newcomer, which was, um, interesting. I didn’t go to any of the parties afterwards. I got a car straight home.
