Tracey Thorne (Everything But The Girl) : I went to see them about four times on that tour. I was practically following them around. I went to see them in Sheffield, and at The Hacienda, and then twice in London, and I was besotted.

I had never done that before with any band. It was partly being in the right time and the right place. I wasn’t living at home any more, I was at university, so it was possible to do that. There was a real sense of being part of something. It was a band who were absolutely on the cusp and it was so exciting, the crowds were manic, and so was the band. There’d be this thing of Morrissey absolutely throwing himself at you … there was no way you could stand back and say, ‘Oh yes, they’re very, very good’. You were swept up and it was like, ‘Wow!’ You know? Those sort of gigs.

I felt as if Morrissey spoke to me. It wasn’t that I wanted him to be my boyfriend, I wanted to be Morrissey … which is slightly strange.

I met him during that tour and we became friends with him very briefly. I hung out backstage and he was very nice to me. I was already releasing records by then and he very kindly put me in the NME at the end of that year as his favourite female singer.

He’s great company, very funny to be around, but, bless his heart, he’s bonkers to be friends with. He’d invite us round for tea and we’d arrive and he wouldn’t be there. Then you’d get a postcard saying, ‘Why didn’t you come?’ So we knew we were in pixieland then.
