Anton Corbijn (photographer) : The cover for Ice Cream For Crow came about as a result of a photo session I did with Beefheart, for the NME, near his home in the Mojave Desert in November 1980. This was the first time I’d met him, first time I photographed him. He is such a playful character, very stimulating to be around, he can jump a conversation just with one word and set it off in a new direction. I didn’t use a lot of film that day, just a couple of rolls, and there were only two shots where he took off his hat, but that made the picture for me.

The shot was used on the cover of NME, but Beefheart liked this picture so much that he subsequently used it on the cover of Ice Cream For Crow. That shoot also led to working with him on several occasions, including making a film with him, Some Yo-Yo Stuff, in 1993, which is the only film made about him since he stopped making music and dedicated himself to painting.
