Fact #168954

When:

Short story:

The Beatles' personal assistant Mal Evans signs The Iveys to The Beatles' company, Apple. The group will achieve success after a name-change to Badfinger.

Full article:

Peter Asher (Head of A + R, Apple Records) : We had put adverts in the press inviting people to send us their tapes, which was a very noble-spirited thing to do but what we didn't realize was just how many utterly untalented people were out there whose self-confidence far outstripped their lack of talent. We got hundreds, probably thousands of tapes and it was almost all awful. Very few people ever got signed from tapes.

Each of The Beatles would come along to the weekly A + R meetings and they'd all really just be interested in their own projects. George would be talking about Jackie Lomax, John about some strange project he was planning with Yoko.

At one particular meeting, Mal was really enthusing about a group he'd been championing, The Iveys. Paul also liked them and John and George were quite impressed by their demo tapes, so we signed them up.

Ron Griffiths (bass, The Iveys) : We were euphoric. Everyone was going crazy, but we didn't have any funds to have a party, so we just ran down to the local pub.
