Neil Aspinall (Beatles roadie) : At some places, particularly at The Cavern, they were treated very well by promoters. Sometimes they got a bonus without asking for it, if there had been a particularly large crowd. At other places it wasn't so good. I remember one occasion when the group played in Walton, a district of Liverpool. Pete and I arrived with the equipment at 8 o'clock; the others reached the place soon afterwards, and we weren't due on until 9:30. One of the promoter's henchmen, a burly muscleman, who acted as a bouncer and threw out troublemakers, poked his head 'round the door as soon as the boys were together. "You arrived over an hour late. Don't do it again." And he was gone without waiting for a reply.

The boys were to perform for one hour but, after their last number, the curtains stayed open and there was nothing the boys could do. They had to do extra numbers. The curtains closed thirty minutes later and the boys came off stage furious. "That'll teach you to arrive late!" declared the bouncer. "They must be joking!" roared Paul. "It's like being back at school and being kept in after lessons as a punishment!"

The following week we had another date at the same hall. Pete, Paul and I turned up, but John and George just went off to the movies instead. That was their way of showing they weren't prepared to be treated like children by a promoter. We never played that hall again and it didn't matter, because the same crowd followed us to another hall in the same neighbourhood.
