When:

Short story:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience are doing further work on the track 1983…(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)/Moon Turn The Tides…Gently Gently Away at Record Plant, New York City, USA.

Full article:

Eddie Kramer (sound engineer) : There are some noises on there that sound like seagulls. They're not seagulls. They're headphones feeding back into the microphone during the vocal. See, Jimi was squaking the headphones into the mike and saying, 'That's great, yeah, it's great,' and all that sound was on the tape. So when we came to do the mix, we said, 'OK, let's have some seagulls.' So we panned them around and treated them, putting a slow delay and echo on them.

Chas Chandler (co-manager, Jimi Hendrix] : I walked out very quickly at Record Plant. I would go in there and wait for Jimi and he would show up with eight or nine hangers-on. When he finally did begin recording, Jimi would be playing for the benefit of his guests, not the machines.

We'd be going over a number again and again and I would say over the talkback, 'That was it. we got it.' He would say, 'No, no, no.' and would record another and another and another. Finally I just threw my hands up and left.

Noel Redding (bassist, JHE) : I vividly remember going into the control room to work on some stuff and there was no chair available, so I said to someone, "Excuse me, can I borrow your chair?" And they looked at me and said, "Who the fuck are you?" Hey, well, I'm only the bass player. Totally stupid shit like that; so then I had a huge argument with Hendrix and that's when it started falling apart.
