Marshall Chess [Chess Records] : I had the key to the recording studio, and wanted to be a conceptual artist, and the first album was Rotary Connection, and my concept and met this arranger, Charles Stepney. I couldn't have done it without him. He was doing lead sheet copies for me.
And one day he had a five-inch thick manuscript of a symphony he had written. He was going to music school, we became friends, and I had this idea of pairing him with a young advertising genius, Roland Binzer. And Roland thought up the name. I started with the name.
And Minnie Ripperton I knew because she was the receptionist at Chess Records. Before that I knew her when she was in a black R'n'B girl group called The Gems. Well, all I ever knew about Minnie was that she had that fuckin' great high C note vocal sound. That's what I wanted to hear. That's how it all began. Minnie and I were close friends. We were the same age. I won't say we dated but we hung out.
