Johnny Black (diary entry) : My wife Carol and I had dinner tonight at The Balzac Bistro with Simon Jeffes and Hans Joachim Roedelius. Simon told us the lovely story of how he once overcame a bout of musical non-inspiration. It seems that he went out to an aunt’s home in the country to try to write some music. The peace and tranquillity drove him to distraction, so he went out into the garden, hung a page of blank score on a tree and fired at it with his uncle’s air pistol. “Then I went inside,” he said mischievously, “and played the holes.”
