Fact #162828

When:

Short story:

The Cure, their wives and girlfriends travel to Venice, Italy, Europe, on the Orient Express.

Full article:

Robert Smith (The Cure) : I’d always tried to keep away from the tabloid press but when we did the Orient Express trip, on the back of the Head On The Door album, that was one of the few occasions when we took some tabloid people along and all the stories that came out of it were about the bar bill, how much drink we had consumed, and you didn’t have to be very astute to realise that this wasn’t a very good path to follow.

Lol Tolhurst (keyboards, The Cure) : As far as I recall the trip was quite pleasant. We all drank a lot on the train and our bar bill for one night was between £1,500 and £2,000.

I was drinking very heavily and was the butt of everyone's jokes and aggression. As a result of the continuous abuse and criticism, I became very ill and lost over a stone in weight. It is correct that when I became drunk, I sometimes became aggressive, largely stemmed by the frustrations which I felt.

Robert Smith (The Cure) : With Lol, a cynical lethargy creeps in because I tend to rely on him for entertainment. I think he is suffering from a massive personality disorder due to oppressed beastliness.

Lol Tolhurst : It was a vicious circle, I drank for confidence, but later, I lost my confidence because of the drink or the constant abuse and I became unable to perform. The other members of the band would constantly play practical jokes on me. As the days wore on these jokes became more and more malicious.
