Johnny Black : It would be all too easy to dismiss this as disposable computer-synthesized chart pop, cynically masterminded by a top production team and fronted by two staggeringly beautiful but brainless puppets. Try as I might, I can’t bring myself to do it.

The grooves that Stock-Aitken-Waterman set up are immaculate – just listen for example to the intricacy of that bassline in Showing Out. The girls interpret the songs with a mixture of dry wit and youthful exuberance that’s too entertaining to ignore, so why knock it?

I’ll take this any day before Five Star or Sam Fox because it seems to have the ability to laugh at itself while providing instant musical gratification for thousands of fans. Switch off the critics, bring on the dancing fools and we’ll soon see who’s really having fun.
