Hugh Fielder (journalist, Sounds) : With the band back on the road, I went up to Norwich to do a piece for Sounds. I got there about 3pm and found the road manager, Phil Cowie. The band were due to arrive at 4.00pm, but they didn't show up so our plan to do the interview before the show was blown out. The band didn't arrive until 8 o'clock, by which time Phil was tearing his hair out, and they didn't have time to do a soundcheck.
They were very flustered, and Morrissey was still obviously not well. I drove him over to his hotel, and I got the feeling that he wasn't enjoying the media attention that had come with their success. Johnny Marr, on the other hand, was very easy to talk to.
The set lasted only 40 minutes, and didn't include Reel Around The Fountain, a Smiths' classic, because Morrissey felt his voice still wasn't up to it. But they did seem to have almost telepathic communication on stage, and it was like a pop gig, just whipping through the songs. The audience already seemed to know all the songs, even though the album had just come out, which is always a good sign. They got a good response, if not ecstatic.
In the hotel afterwards, Johnny did the interview because Morrissey immediately retired to bed. Johnny was bemused by the way their audience was changing. The lyrics of Hand In Glove had appeared in Smash Hits, and they were starting to get little girls approaching them.
