Fact #159478

When:

Short story:

The Who, supported by Nine Below Zero, play at the Leisure Centre, Deeside, North Wales, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Steve Davies (audience) : Five years after I first saw them, I went back a second time and came away very disappointed.

This was quite a small venue, maybe 8,000 people, and they were playing much too loud for a place that size, and I got the feeling Townsend only grudgingly played the old hits.

John Entwistle (bassist, The Who) : On this English tour, about 50% of the audience hadn’t even seen us before, and they wanted to hear the old things. Kids still wanna hear Substitute and My Generation and all that stuff.

Steve Davies : There were a lot of punks in the crowd, and lots of heckling from punters who wanted to hear the early songs like My Generation and Substitute, but Townshend was intent on playing stuff from the new album, Face Dances.

He didn’t even deal with the hecklers very well. He addressed them in this reedy, whining voice and I found myself quite embarrassed by him, as did my girlfriend of the time.
