Fact #158909

When:

Short story:

San Francisco-based rock entrepreneur Bill Graham expands his concert venue empire by opening The Fillmore East (formerly the Village Theatre) in New York City, USA.

Full article:

Amalie R. Rothschild (film-maker/photographer) : The Fillmore East had been an old Loew's movie house. It was intimate and, at the same time, it was able to hold over 2,600 people.

Like everybody who worked there, I was at NYU. The Fillmore East was literally next door to the building that housed Theater and film programs. The first sound engineer at the venue was the equipment technician in the film program and, one afternoon, he gave me a pass to come by, a few weeks after it opened.

I began coming regularly to hear the music and slowly I began photographing because it was such an exciting place to be. And there was free reign, there were no rules about those things in those days.
